"Heated Issue" - Design an awareness campaign to educate the public on the issue of global warming.

"Child's Play" - Design an object that encourages children to cultivate their own imagination and creativity.

"ShelterMe" - Design a temporary emergency shelter for deployment in a natural disaster.

Design curator Cynthia Smith, who judged the ShelterMe competition, said: "Overall, I was struck by the large number and variety of innovative solutions submitted, which is an indication of the expanding interest in socially responsible design. The selected finalists reflect the range of thinking for what is required; not necessarily one approach for any geographical area or situation."

Berlin on a plate

ImageThe architectural firm of Rios Clemente Hale is known for the distinctive patterns and bursts of color that wrap the restaurants, schools and public spaces they design. But not every idea made it from the blueprints to the buildings, and the principals soon found themselves with a plethora of concepts that might work better as housewares than houses. In 2001 they launched notNeutral, a lifestyle and product design company where they could take their musings to the masses. They secured a storefront on Los Angeles’ Melrose Avenue to showcase the collection, which is utterly architectural in spirit. Example: A new furniture line named Tetra draws equal inspiration from case study housing and the Nintendo game Tetris. But a recent release named City Plates takes architecture-as-product to a new level: A series of four plates feature downtown maps of four cities—L.A., Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin —sure to evoke all sorts of geography, urbanism and planning conversations around the dinner table.

ImageCapital Garden

A new concept for the central located park named Capital Garden is to be found. Due to its core location, this project has the option to be a cultural and economic heart of one of the most important capitals of the Middle East.

The designated mixture of an ultra compact built-up development and an extremely attractive open space for the population should transform the existing Capital Garden into a place of identification, vitality an not least a maximum creation of value of investment.

Capital Garden is one of the oldest remaining green areas in Abu Dhabi. Since the city in its current form was only developed in the 1970s without any special historical or conservational value, however there is a certain idealistic value due to the central situation, and the relatively high age of the trees of approx. 30 years.

ImageArquitectum 2nd Urban Architecture Competition : New York 2007

This architectural competition is being promoted by Arquitectum to evaluate proposals for the construction of a new monument to the urban, cosmopolitan and "universal" character of New York City.

To that end, this project (a 100 metre tall tower), will house a museum which will display the belongings, memories and photos of the new generation of immigrants which - from the 1960s onwards - headed for a city they saw as the paradigm of the American Dream.

This museum tower - to be located at the tip of the island on a pier over Battery Park - will not only become an architectural landmark, but also serve as a space dedicated to the celebration of the new urban dynamic of global multiculturalism and interracial relations in the 21st century.
